With so many topics being controversial lately, I would have never guessed that running in a fasted state would be. “GASP! You mean to tell me you DON’T eat anything prior to your runs??” Nope. I don’t. Then I get the lecture. “Well, you NEED to eat SOMETHING before a workout!!” It’s all good. I’m used to it. Running is such an individual thing that we must do what is best for us, what’s best for our own bodies. So I take these comments in stride—pun intended. Typically, I do well running while fasted. My last meal happens around 7pm the night before and my run starts around 6am the next day. It’s not like I’m running on empty or even fasting for that long. But once summer hit, something was off in my body. I felt sluggish during my runs. As a Bib Rave Creator, I had the opportunity to test out MetCon START. It’s a pre-workout supplement that is zero calories, full of electrolytes and vitamins. Also, it wouldn’t break my fast. This was key for me and the #1 reason I tested this product.

I’m pleased to say that MetCon START is the pre-workout supplement I never knew I needed. It’s been my go-to supplement for all of my speed session runs and I really like it. It’s interesting because I used to think I didn’t need to consume anything prior to a run. Now I know how my body feels when I take START. I’m definitely stronger out there.

MetCon START dissolves instantly and goes down so smooth that you’ll never guess it’s from powder. © Andrea Heser 2020

Here are my favorite things about MetCon START:
✅ It dissolves quickly, like almost instantly. That’s cool. No gritty texture, no waiting around for it to dissolve. When I say it dissolves quickly, I mean it. It’s crazy. See my video for proof.
✅ My tummy feels totally fine immediately after I drink it and forever afterwards. START doesn’t give me any stomach aches and I love that. This is another reason why I’m hesitant about consuming food prior to a run. I don’t want to get tummy aches and then search for a bathroom, run home or have an accident.
✅ It makes my body tingle. It’s weird and caught me totally off guard. I felt like a race horse chomping at the bit. Even after a month of taking MetCon START prior to my speed runs, I still get the tingle. I read that it could be from the caffeine or the K2 vitamin.
✅ Speaking of caffeine, there is 200mg per serving. That’s about the same amount in 16oz of coffee.
✅ It does give me the extra push. Still, I listen to my body but I am able to push more since taking MetCon START.
✅ The flavor is mild and the stevia in it isn’t overwhelming sweet. They say the flavor is fruit punch, but I taste lots of citrus. Also, once mixed in water, MetCon START resembles the look of lemonade.
✅ I love that it’s all natural and has zero calories. This is HUGE! This was the selling point for me. I did not want to consume calories and MetCon START fits the bill.

If you are curious in trying MetCon START, BibRave is offering 20% off a one time purchase or an additional 20% off first subscription order when you apply discount code BibRave at Amazon checkout.

5 Reasons You Should Wear a ROADiD

Disclaimer: I received an ROADiD Sidekick & Kids iD to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find, and write race reviews.

heser-andrea-bibrave-roadID-bibchat.jpgheser-andrea-bibrave-roadID-bibchat.jpg

According to a 2016 Runner’s World Magazine survey, 56% of American runners prefer to run alone. I’m one of them. It’s not that I don’t like the company — cause I really do! — it’s just easier for me to run alone. I get out of bed, don’t have to drive anywhere, then quickly get back home in time to get my son ready for school and myself ready for work. But running alone has its downfalls, like what if I were to actually fall? If a runner falls while on the run and no one sees it, did it really happen? Um, yeah it really happens and it’s a scary thought. This is why I opted-in as a BibRave Pro to test out the ROADiD Sidekick iD for my Garmin feñix 5S.

Here are my top 5 reasons why you should wear a ROADiD.

1️⃣ ID that’s always on you:

This is a biggie for me. I run with a hydration vest because I love to carry all of my gear with me: phone, sunscreen, whistle, water, fuel, keys, a small hand towel but one thing I rarely ever carry is my identification. IDK exactly why I don’t carry my iD with me but once I started writing this blog post, I figured it out. I don’t like digging into my wallet before each run to pull it out then remember to put it back when I get back. Hence the ease of the Sidekick iD. Since I wear my Garmin watch daily, it’s a no brainer to have a Sidekick iD. My iD is always with me.

2️⃣ Contact info that is easily visible:

I position my ROADiD on the interior of my wrist. That serves two purposes: 1. it’s easily visible to a bystander or EMT or another runner. I had fellow runner ask me about because they noticed it! There is 6 lines of copy you can include on your ROADiD Sidekick iD. That was enough space for me to include my name, year of birth, the city I currently live in, two contact names and phone numbers and my personal mantra. 2. Easily visible to myself so I can read my mantra.

3️⃣ My mantra is always with me:

(^‿^) FIND JOY ALWAYS. this is my mantra and it’s not even running related. Sometimes I forget it (I have WAY too much on my mind) and I know having a visual reminder is best for a visual person like myself. The cool thing about the ROADiD Sidekick iD is that you have 6 lines of copy space. Since I don’t have any medical information to include on my iD, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to write out a mantra. I was happy to know that ROADiD was able to include my kawaii emoji face too!

The Sidekick iD comes with two bungee attachments, so alternate them if one gets too sweaty or wet from a workout or daily life. The Sidekick iD comes with two bungee attachments, so alternate them if one gets too sweaty or wet from a workout or daily life.

The Sidekick iD comes with two bungee attachments, so alternate them if one gets too sweaty or wet from a workout or daily life.

4️⃣ It looks good with my Garmin:

I love it when accessories match. One of the biggest reasons I even opted-in for the ROADiD Sidekick iD is purely a vain one, they had a rose gold option. I’m obsessed with my Garmin feñix 5S. It’s an expensive watch. I rarely ever take it off because it’s so much more than just a running watch, it’s a fashion statement too. So, in order for me to add ANYTHING to my watch, it had to match. I’m pleased that the rose gold Sidekick iD rose gold tones match very well to the Garmin rose gold tones. It’s very pretty. One missed opportunity though is that I wish ROADiD could make the Sidekick for the Garmin and Fitbit to fit more like how it fits on the Apple watch. IE: no bungee adapter. The bungee adds extra bulk. Also, I noticed that the bungee would get soaking wet if I washed my hands too vigorously or during a major sweat sesh run. I recommend alternating between the 2 bungees you get with your Sidekick iD. This ensures that one can dry out while the other holds your id to your wrist.

andrea-heser-bibrave-roadid-kids.jpgandrea-heser-bibrave-roadid-kids.jpg

5️⃣ Excellent for kids:

I was lucky enough to also test out the Kids iD. I got the Sandcastle color for my son. There was enough room for 5 lines of type which I was able to include his name, year of birth, two contact phone numbers and names and his own personal mantra: Be Awesome Today. He loved it so much that he thought his younger cousin would also like one. I purchased her the same colored band with her own emergency contact info and kept the same mantra. It’s hard for kids to remember phone numbers and not kids carry their own cell phone around. I like how easy it is for a child to point to their Kids iD when alerting an adult on how to reach their emergency contacts.

Get one for yourself

I only opt-in for products that I feel I have a strong connection to, that I believe in and that I trust. I really love ROADiD products. They impressed me with their quality and excellent communication throughout the entire purchasing process. Knockaround Sunglasses: The Fun Pair

Fun-SeventyNine-Andrea-Heser-Bibrave-knockaround.jpgFun-SeventyNine-Andrea-Heser-Bibrave-knockaround.jpg

It’s obvious according to my blogs that I’m a big fan of Knockaround sunglasses (see my previous blog posts below.) Their sunnies are the best. Why? They are made well, pretty much all frames cost under $30 and their styles are cute as all heck. When BibRave asked the pros a month ago who wants to opt-in to test a Run-pair and Fun-pair of Knockaround I jumped up and down for the opportunity. But before you get all confused about what is considered a Run-pair and what is a Fun-pair, I’ll let you in on a little secret. ALL of their sunglasses are suitable for Run or for Fun! Yeah, even their new Seventy Nines style. Although the Seventy Nines are durable, I mostly wore them during fun activities. Their gold accents and blocky thick frames was the modern yet retro look I wanted to wear during fun outings.

Seventy Nines are Tough and Stylish

When asked to choose a Fun-pair of sunglasses, I immediately wanted to go out of my comfort zone and try something totally new. I love how Knockaround offers a wide variety of frame styles. Their Seventy Nines caught my eye because they looked fashion-forward yet had a vintage vibe to them. The gold hardware and details like the logo and rivet in the front, got my attention. Same with the gradient lenses. I love to wear that style while driving or being outdoors because of the easier viewability in the lower portion of the lens. According to the Knockaround website, Seventy Nines have durable 5-barrel hinges. That means they will last because I don’t have to budget to purchase new sunglasses every year. The frame are smaller than what I’d like because I have such a wide face. They recommend this frame style to small to medium-sized faces. Still, I feel they looked nice on me. The color I tested was the Beverly Peach. The soft warm color is flattering with my skin tone. Their blocky frames are super fun. I got many compliments while wearing these frames.

Here are some key features:

  • Beverly peach frames

  • Amber gradient lenses, polarized option available

  • Gold hardware

  • UV400 protection

  • FDA approved, impact resistant lenses with laser etch logo

  • Protective pouch included

  • Lens Width: 45 mm

  • Lens Height: 38 mm

  • Nose Bridge: 18 mm

  • Arm Length: 146 mm

  • $25

  • Seventy Nines come in 10 other colors too!

Mostly, I wore the Seventy Nines while running errands, having fun outdoors, driving and to work.Mostly, I wore the Seventy Nines while running errands, having fun outdoors, driving and to work.

Run? Fun? Both!

I’ll be honest. The campaign for Knockaround was to find a pair of their sunglasses suitable for Run and another for Fun but you can’t. ALL of their frames, even the stylish ones, are a good choice for running or outdoor strength training. If you are curious to try a pair out for yourself then go to Knockaround.com to check out.

Yeah, even their Mile High aviators. This is exactly why I wanted to test out their Mile High’s during my running activities. I wanted to really put their metal frames to the test when it comes to being active. And their Mile Highs did not let me down.

Mile High Aviators are Tough and Stylish

When you think of aviator sunglasses do you think military? Top Gun? Badassness? Trendy? Maybe you don’t think running. I love the style of aviators because of their military background and I wanted to feel and look badass when running. Also, I like how typical aviator lenses are HUGE so that means major sun blockage. According to Wikipedia, aviators are characterised by dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times of area of the eyeball, and have very thin metal frames with a double or triple bridge. They say the design attempts to cover the entire range of the human eye to prevent as much light as possible from entering the eye from any angle. This is probably why pilots wear them. So why can’t a runner wear them? Knockaround’s version of the aviator is the Mile High or the Mount Evans. I opted in to test the Mile High in Rose Gold and Copper. Here are some Mile High specs:

Here are some key features:

  • Rose gold metal frame

  • Tortoise shell rubber detailing

  • Polarized copper lenses

  • Full UV400 protection

  • FDA approved impact resistant lenses

  • Nose Bridge: 21 mm

  • Mile High’s come in 8 other colors too!

Durable, Cute & Willing to Go the Distance

The Knockaround website doesn’t exactly say the Mile Highs are ment for running. Still, I knew these would be my Run-pair to test. Typically, I never see any runners wear metal framed glasses while running and I wasn’t sure why. For the past month, I wore my Mile Highs during most training runs and during one 4th of July 4 mile race. During every run they stayed on my face, never bounced, completely blocked the sun, made me look 100% like a badass. And then, while wearing them during the 4th of July 4 miler race with Arizona Road Racers, I PR’ed the course! The last time I ran the course this fast was in 2015 and I was 4 years YOUNGER! This was a huge confidence boost for me. Was it the Mile High’s? I wouldn’t doubt it. I know those sunnies are magical.

On the run fuel is super important for every runner. There are so many brands on the market, so finding one that you like could get difficult. Just recently through BibRave and as a BibRave Pro, I’ve been testing isotonic gels by Science in Sport. These gels are a quality product and I actually enjoy consuming them. I tested out 4 different flavors (Espresso, Apple, Salted Strawberry and Lemon & Mint) so I’ll give you my top 4 reasons why I recommend SIS.

1️⃣ It has less than one gram of sugar per serving.

I try not to consume extra sugar, but I get that as a runner I need the carbs to get me through some serious runs. SIS has approximately 22 grams of carbs per serving but only one gram of that is sugar! IDK how they did that, but I like the fact that I’m not consuming extra sugar for the sake of getting carbs.

2️⃣ You don’t need water.

The size of each gel pack is 2oz. Some would say that is huge because other brands are about half that size. I get it, 1oz extra of something to carry or consume could be annoying, but SIS is that size for a reason. The consistency of SIS is smooth, light and slightly liquidy, meaning you don’t need water to consume it, like how you need water with other brands. On the 4th of July, I raced a 4 miler and I ate SIS 15 minutes before gun time. I really like the fact how I could just eat SIS and not choke. I was able to eat it without water and that’s a good thing especially when you are at a start line for a race.

3️⃣ So many electrolytes packed in one small package.

Two of the flavors I tested were specifically made with extra electrolytes: Salted Strawberry and Lemon & Mint. Each of these flavors are part of the SIS GO Energy + Electrolyte Gel line. According to SIS, electrolytes including sodium, potassium and magnesium are lost through sweat and need to be replaced in order to help the body maintain fluid balance, alongside an appropriate fluid intake. Each of these 2oz gels have 118mg sodium, 9.5mg potassium and 1.5mg magnesium per gel. I consumed one gel about an hour before my 4th of the July 4 miler race and another 15 minutes prior to gun time and I know that it was the SIS gels that helped me PR my time on this course! I haven’t beaten that time in 4 years!

4️⃣Huge caffeine kick

The buzz from the Espresso with caffeine is real! I was bouncing off the walls 20 minutes after eating. This was the jolt I needed for my 3 mile morning speed sesh run. Since the caffeine is is incredibly intense, I recommend consuming this for morning runs. I did take one in the evening as a test and I ended up staying up to late. There is 150mg of caffeine in the Espresso flavor which is about 55mg more caffeine than in an 8oz cup of coffee. Oh, and here’s a tip I discovered! Try chilling the Espresso flavor. When I first tested the flavor, I ate it at room temp. That reminded me of drinking a room temp day old coffee. Not the taste I wanted. The next time, I chilled it in the fridge overnight. Boom! It was like having an iced coffee. So, I recommend eating this flavor during prior to your runs, so you have the opportunity to chill it beforehand.

Win some for yourself

Yep, I’m giving away a free 6-pack of gels to two of my Instagram followers. Please head over to my IG post and tag a fellow runner that you’d like to try SIS with, because testing products is much better with friends! If you don’t win, that’s ok. Do you sweat a ton? I do. I’m not embarrassed about it. Actually, I like sweating because it feels fantastic. What I don’t like is the crashed feeling I get 4 hours after a sweat sesh. My electrolytes are depleted and I end up getting a headache and I want to nap. I found that energy drinks help in my crash, but the extra calories and sugar from the big brands really get me down. This is where Ultima Replenisher comes into play. As a BibRave Pro, I get to test out a variety of running products and fuel products. I jumped on the opportunity to test out Ultima Replenisher because it’s a sugar-free and carb-free way to get electrolytes back in the body after a serious sweat sesh. I’ll explain what Ultima is, the flavors they offer, how to drink it to get the most benefit and Ultima recipe hacks! At the very end is a discount code, so please don’t miss out on that.

Ultima-VarietyPack-Open-20ctBox.jpgUltima-VarietyPack-Open-20ctBox.jpg

More than a typical energy drink

Think of Ultima Replenisher as an energy drink but better for the body. There are tons of pre-activity, during-activity and post-activity drinks on the market. They basically all do the same thing: replenish your body with electrolytes and minerals lost from working out and sweating. The thing that sets Ultima apart from the rest is that it is natural (nothing artificial is in it, even the coloring), has zero calories-sugar-carbs and has 6 of the body’s most needed electrolytes and support minerals. Ultima is also 100% vegan, gluten-free, non-gmo, paleo and keto-friendly! This is huge because many people I know are following these types of eating lifestyles and finding products that fit within is difficult.

Replacing lost minerals and electrolytes after an activity and building them up before an activity is important to feeling good. Since I’ve been consuming Ultima before, during and after working out, I’ve noticed my headaches are gone. These are the ingredients that help combat that feeling of fatigue after a tough workout and the first six minerals are the ones that make up the electrolyte spectrum:
✨ Chloride ✨ Calcium ✨ Sodium ✨ Magnesium ✨ Potassium ✨ Phosphorus ✨ Vitamin C ✨ Zinc ✨ Manganese

According to Ultimate Replenisher, electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge. They have an impact on how your muscles function and how much water you have in your body. In addition to their individual roles, electrolytes often work in harmony with vitamins and other minerals in the body to keep you feeling good and performing at your best.

All the Flavors!

Ultima Replenisher has a flavor for you. Current flavors are:
💗🍋 Pink Lemonade 🍒❤️ Cherry Pomegranate 🍇 Grape 🍋 Lemonade 🍊 Orange 💗 Raspberry 🍓 Toddler Berry Punch

The only two flavors I didn’t test were the Pink Lemonade and Toddler Berry Punch. My absolute favorite flavor is the Lemonade! It taste like real lemons and isn’t that sweet. It has the perfect amount of tartness and it taste great cold, hot and mixed in smoothies. It’s so versatile! All other flavors were good, but the one I liked the least is the Grape. It was too sweet for my liking and kinda had a bitter taste. I only had 3 single serving packets of that flavor to test and I wasn’t able to try it in different ways or in recipes.

andrea-heser-bibrave-ultima.jpgandrea-heser-bibrave-ultima.jpg

When do you drink it?

That’s easy! Before, during and after your activities. According to Ultima Replenisher, proper hydration during an activity follows something similar to this: 1️⃣ 16oz of water + one serving (1/2 teaspoon) of Ulitma Replenisher 2 hours prior to activity. 2️⃣ 8oz of water 30 minutes prior to activity. 3️⃣ 4-6oz of water every 20 minutes during activity. 4️⃣16oz of water + one serving (1/2 teaspoon) of Ultima Replenisher after activities over 1 hour to replenish minerals lost during sweating. If you sweat a lot with activities that are under an hour, then use your discretion in taking the extra Ultima or not. I’ll run a hard 5k in 30 minutes and I’m always drenched after, so I will consume extra Ultima after only 30 minutes of strenuous activity.

Ultima Replenisher is Versatile!

If you’ve been reading my previous blog posts and following me on Pinterest, you’d know that I have been experimenting with Ultima Replenisher. You don’t have to only add it to cold water! I made a warm drink with the Lemonade flavor that I call Hot Lemon Bar. I’ve added it to my favorite smoothie recipe during blend mode and added Ultima in a pre-made smoothie. I’ve also added Ultima to yogurt! The possibilities are endless. Experiment a little and you might find a new way enjoy getting the electrolytes you need.

Thrilled I wasn’t afraid to experiment! The raspberry adds a wonderful tartness to my smoothie and sweetens it up a bit without adding any sugar or carbs!

✅1 scoop (1/2 tsp) @GoUltima Raspberry flavor
✅1c unsweetened almond milk
✅1c frozen spinach
✅1/2 tsp ground turmeric
✅1 scoop of your fav vanilla flavored protein powder

😍🥤Blend & enjoy electrolytes the benefits of electrolytes as a smoothie!

But I already blended my smoothie and forgot to add Ultima, now what?

Made your smoothie but forgot to add Ultima Replenisher? No worries. Just stir it in post blend. Ultima Replenisher dissolves quickly in cold or hot substances. The Lemonade flavor added a delicious tart punch to my spinach turmeric smoothie.

Oops, forgot to blend in Ultima Replenisher. No biggie. Just stir it in post blend! This is a perfect hack when ordering pre-made smoothies! Try it!Oops, forgot to blend in Ultima Replenisher. No biggie. Just stir it in post blend! This is a perfect hack when ordering pre-made smoothies! Try it!

You did it. You bought your first Orange Mud product and it’s the Gear Vest Pro! Smart decision. This pack will take you anywhere your heart imagines. I’ve been running trail races and doing all of my training runs exclusively in the Gear Vest Pro. It’s my new favorite because it’s lightweight, breathable, doesn’t bounce, has tons of storage and just look at that Coyote Brown color! You are finally ready to take it out on a run or ride, but first, what the heck are all of those pockets for?

1️⃣ Rear Cargo

This open ended storage pocket is perfect for items you need to get to quickly. It’s perfect for fuel, extra clothing and gear. Since the top is open and doesn’t have a zipper, I wouldn’t store valuable things here, just items you need quick access to. Cinching the shock cord helps keep items in this part of the pack more secure.

2️⃣ Hydration Bladder

The Orange Mud hydration bladder is one of the best I’ve used and tested. It’s soft, easy to fill and easy to drink from. The Gear Vest Pro can fit the 1L/35oz sized bladder in the back and gives you hydration that is good for about 1 to 1.5 hours of activity.

3️⃣ Shock Cord

If you need to carry lightweight outerwear like a windbreaker or light jacket, then store it in the shock cord area. This is a perfect spot for extra clothing or even a blanket.

4️⃣ Zippered Pocket with Key Clip

ID, cash, keys and anything valuable should be stored in the secure zippered pocket. This is the only pocket on the Gear Vest Pro that has a zipper. You can store a ton here although it would have been a good idea to have a zippered pocket on the front for easier accessibility. Still, this pocket is easy to access by sliding the vest off of one shoulder.

5️⃣& 6️⃣ Shoulder Pockets

The Gear Vest Pro has two large front shoulder pockets. The openings are stretchy and they are secured by hook and loop closure. They are secure enough for fuel, lip balm, sunscreen, wet wipes and other non-valuable items that you need quick access too. Keep you valuables in the back zippered pocket.

7️⃣& 8️⃣ Front Pockets

These huge front pockets are perfect for extra Orange Mud hydration flasks. They can even fit a standard 16oz water bottle. They do have a drawstring closure so you could store fuel, phone, tripod and even your keys. Be careful though, I did have my keys slip out while bending over to tie my shoe because I didn’t cinch the drawstring properly.

9️⃣& 1️⃣0️⃣ Trash Pockets

These are handy little front pockets that are primarily used to store trash from fuel. I found you could easily store lip balm, tissues and even tuck in the valve of the hydration bladder here.

Summer is coming. Preparation is a must! The weather is going to be sticking in the triple-digits soon and that doesn’t mean I bunker down in my A/C controlled house for the rest of the summer and wait it out. I’ll still be running, doing other outdoor activities and taking to my son to swim team practice 4x a week. Since I’ll be out in the sun so much and sweating buckets, I’ll need my electrolytes replenished. I’m thankful that I was chosen to test out Ultima Replenisher as a BibRave Pro.

All the Nutrients & no sugar

Does sugar give you a little boost? It does for me too but then I come crashing down. I hate when that happens when I consume sugary drinks. I love that Ultima Replenisher gives you all the nutrients that give you a boost, but doesn’t have any sugar that would cause a crash. I’m getting some extra electrolytes, Here are some of the vitamins & minerals that I enjoy getting from Ultima:
✨ 0 – calories
✨ 0 – carbs & sugars
✨ 100mg – vit C
✨ 65mg – calcium
✨ 100mg – magnesium
✨ 1mg – zinc
✨ 78mg – chloride
✨ 250mg – potassium

Hot Lemon Bar Recipe

I read from the Ultima Replenisher website that it can be added to hot or cold water. Usually, my mornings consist of hot coffee & cream. It’s the warmness that helps me wake up, not the caffeine. I also enjoy hot tea with cream. Decided to try Ultima this morning, hot with cream to see how’d I like it. Well, this might be my new routine because I’m getting some extra electrolytes, vitamins & minerals that I wouldn’t get with coffee:

✅1 scoop @GoUltima Lemonade flavor
✅12oz hot water
✅2 tbsp heavy cream or your fav dairy or non dairy creamer

😍🍋☕️Stir, sip & enjoy the benefits of electrolytes as a hot drink!
