On the run fuel is super important for every runner. There are so many brands on the market, so finding one that you like could get difficult. Just recently through BibRave and as a BibRave Pro, I’ve been testing isotonic gels by Science in Sport. These gels are a quality product and I actually enjoy consuming them. I tested out 4 different flavors (Espresso, Apple, Salted Strawberry and Lemon & Mint) so I’ll give you my top 4 reasons why I recommend SIS.

1️⃣ It has less than one gram of sugar per serving.

I try not to consume extra sugar, but I get that as a runner I need the carbs to get me through some serious runs. SIS has approximately 22 grams of carbs per serving but only one gram of that is sugar! IDK how they did that, but I like the fact that I’m not consuming extra sugar for the sake of getting carbs.

2️⃣ You don’t need water.

The size of each gel pack is 2oz. Some would say that is huge because other brands are about half that size. I get it, 1oz extra of something to carry or consume could be annoying, but SIS is that size for a reason. The consistency of SIS is smooth, light and slightly liquidy, meaning you don’t need water to consume it, like how you need water with other brands. On the 4th of July, I raced a 4 miler and I ate SIS 15 minutes before gun time. I really like the fact how I could just eat SIS and not choke. I was able to eat it without water and that’s a good thing especially when you are at a start line for a race.

3️⃣ So many electrolytes packed in one small package.

Two of the flavors I tested were specifically made with extra electrolytes: Salted Strawberry and Lemon & Mint. Each of these flavors are part of the SIS GO Energy + Electrolyte Gel line. According to SIS, electrolytes including sodium, potassium and magnesium are lost through sweat and need to be replaced in order to help the body maintain fluid balance, alongside an appropriate fluid intake. Each of these 2oz gels have 118mg sodium, 9.5mg potassium and 1.5mg magnesium per gel. I consumed one gel about an hour before my 4th of the July 4 miler race and another 15 minutes prior to gun time and I know that it was the SIS gels that helped me PR my time on this course! I haven’t beaten that time in 4 years!

4️⃣Huge caffeine kick

The buzz from the Espresso with caffeine is real! I was bouncing off the walls 20 minutes after eating. This was the jolt I needed for my 3 mile morning speed sesh run. Since the caffeine is is incredibly intense, I recommend consuming this for morning runs. I did take one in the evening as a test and I ended up staying up to late. There is 150mg of caffeine in the Espresso flavor which is about 55mg more caffeine than in an 8oz cup of coffee. Oh, and here’s a tip I discovered! Try chilling the Espresso flavor. When I first tested the flavor, I ate it at room temp. That reminded me of drinking a room temp day old coffee. Not the taste I wanted. The next time, I chilled it in the fridge overnight. Boom! It was like having an iced coffee. So, I recommend eating this flavor during prior to your runs, so you have the opportunity to chill it beforehand.
